He employs nine horses, andabout fifteen men in his business, andhandles more wood, coal, and ice thanany other concern in the city. Somethree years ago Mr. Roberts constructedone of the best ice houses in NewHampshire, near the Marsh Hill springsin Belmont, near the city, where he also. |nhn Roberts. built an artificial pond by damming thestream, and his present plant for cuttingand handling ice cannot be surpassedin New England, for the waters of theMarsh hill spring are widely famous fortheir purity and medicinal qualities, andthere can be no better ice in the worldthan Mr. Roberts delivers to his pa-trons. Mr. John I,. Roberts, the proprietorof this business, was born in Belmont,September n, 1858, and was educatedin the common schools. He started int h e milk busi-ness in Gilfordin 1 8 7 9 , a n dcontinued forabout ten came to La-conia in iS,s<).and started inthe wood, coal,and grain busi-ness alone. InApril, 1892, , w i t h(. A. I )unn, andfrank M. San-born, formedtheLaconia , and WoodCo., and contin-ued until Octo-ber 22, 1896,when Mr. Rob-erts bought theentile business,which he stillcontinues. Mr.
