Post treatment chemical tanks, The Irvine Desalter Project, Irvine Ranch Water District, Irvine, California, USA. May 2008.
After water treatment additional chemicals, sodium hydroxide (closest), sodium hypochlorite (middle), ammonia (far) are added for stabilization and disinfection. The Irvine Desalter Project produces drinking potable water by purifying ground waters from the Orange County basin. Due to natural geology in the area groundwaters beneath Irvine have high salt concentration, so it is treated using reverse osmosis, decarbonation and disinfection. The facility supplies enough potable drinking water for about 50,000 people. Photo May 2008
