They were robbed of nearly all their valuablesand clothing, fed with rations barely sufficient to sustain life, andliterally packed and jammed into such close quarters that the foulair infused a pestilential poison through their systems. They wereragged and dirty, gaunt and ghastly, with pale, pinched faces, hollowcheeks, and sunken, restless eyes. Many were sick, several weredying, numbers had died, and the least afflicted could make no cal-culations of life. It was a scene of wretchedness and misery tosicken the heart of any being possessing the common feelings ofhumanity. Probably the most restless people in the world are the Americans,and for this reason they make the most troublesome prisoners.
