Noted above as a son of Major-Gen-eral Daniel Gookin, a friend of the praying Indians, of JohnEliots time. lie was not only Marshal-General of the colony ANCIENT MIDDLESEX. 14? for a brief period, but was a Captain of Militia in 1()92 and activein the Indian troubles. He also raised troops in ITll for an ex-pedition to Canada. In KiST he was appointed a Sheriff of ^lid-dlesex, under Andros, whom he ardently supported. In additionto his term of twelve years he was again appointed in ]71S andserved until 1729. Of his ability there can be but one o])inion, but in many ways he appears to have lacked discretion. Hisservice of two terms of twelve years each as SheriiT is sufificientevidence that the authorities forgave his zeal and friendshi]) forthe despised Andros. He died September 2(), 1730, aged sev-enty-eight years. See note. Col, Edmund Goffe, of Cambridge, I7H to J7I7 (3 years).. Born 1()70. Graduated from Harvard in KiOO. Selectman,1717 and 18. Representative 171(i to 1724. Colonel in 1724,and eng-aged against the Indians. He was a very able businessman and accumulated a large estate, but towards the close of hislife became of unsound mind as appears by a report of the Select-men, June 11, 1740, on which he was committed to Gaol, where he survived but four months. During the time of hismental troubles the records show that his property was largelydissipated and his estate was rendered insolvent thereby. Hedied Octol^er IG, 1740, aged seventy years. Samuel Goofcin, 1717 to J 729 (12 years).See above. Note. Samuel Gookin, a son of above, who was born August 14,IGSo, and died in 17G7, was appointed Deputy SheriiT by his father in lTO-2,when 19 years of age, and appears to have served as such until about thetime of his death at 84 years of age
