It oci-upies the area between the ischial tub-erosities on the two sides, the lower margin of the symphysis anteriorlyand the tip of the coccyx posteriorly. The distance between the innersides of the ischial tuberosities is designated the transverse diameterand measures normally centimeters (4-/., inches). The antero-posterior diameter extends from the lower margin of the symphysis tothe tip of the coccyx; this distance is usually centimeters (S*/;. Fig. 18.—Normal pelvis showing diameters of the superior strait. (Williams.) inches), but when the coccyx is pushed back by the head during labor, the available diameter is increased to (4V5 inches). These measure-ments are directly obtainable without inconveniencing the patient. Many other planes and lines have been described, but a discussion ofsuch less essential details is beyond the scope of this work. Pelvimetry.—For practical purposes certain measurements of thepelvis are advisable before labor so that the obstetrician may recognizethe abnormally small pelvis in time to institute proper measures fordelivery. The instruments employed are called pelvimeters; innumer-able types are in use, but the underlying principle of the calipers isthe basis for practically all of them. The width of the pelvis is esti-mated by taking the distance between the outer surfaces of the anteriorsuperior spines of the iliac bones—the interspinous diameter—and that 30 TEXTBOOK OF OBSTETRICS
