This is because theyoung animal is building bone and flesh, rather thanfat. As the animal approaches maturity, there isless call for nutrients to develop framework, andmore for fat tissue and maintenance needs. To make clearer the relation of foods to animalrequirements with reference to the digestible nutri-ents, a chart is given below showing the proportionof protein, or nitrogenous constituents, to starches, fats, etc., called non-nitrogenous, in each of severalcommon foodstuffs. These foods are arranged intheir order according to the relative richness of eachfood in protein, the one richest in this nutrientbeing placed at the top and the one lowest in pro-tein at the bottom. 25 PROFITABLE STOCK O t/5 = o C/3 i« W c (/I o(U o O CI- TS ^^ ^ c TJ -i«: O O Q I- O o z :^s oo 3 . c ?^ CQo ^ > C/l cu (X) oo c =1 >s X«J ? o oo O o> O i2 ^ (Z DIGESTIBLE AUTKIENTiJ. 27 Jiuiuiyyuk uu 11-^ <y- 00 06 •so00 0CXJ — — c*^ f^ 0^ — \0 0 C^ c» VO CNI CNI CVJ •*- in vo 00 o^ ^>J5 ^^ ^5^ go ^^ 20^ fee ^b^ fe«^> o^>U-oQi«ico< o EO J CO 4)« -C 28 PROFITABLE STOCK FEEDING. The nutritive ratio i :7, which is approximatelycorrect for the needs of the average fattening- ani-mal, makes a convenient dividing line between thetwo classes of foods. The upper page shows thatthere are several foods containing a proportion ofprotein in excess of the requirements of fatteninganimals. It is apparent to the reader
