It seems that the objectof some of the companies (especially contractors and companiesthat build lines to sell) is to build just as cheap as they possiblycan, never caring anything about what the trouble is nor who hasit after they have been paid for the work or have sold out. Instead of building the transmission line through towns andvillages where there are countless numbers of trees, which aresure to cause trouble in the course of time, a line should be builton private right of way around the villages, thus having no treesto cause trouble at any time, and in. case of lines breaking, fromany cause, instead of having high-voltage wire down along thestreet, where anyone may be killed (as may happen and quitefrequently does), it would be at a place where no one would be indanger. In my opinion it would be cheaper to build the line around thevillages than to take the chance of paying for the lives that areap^ to be lost in case of a break in a busy street. Because, almost. an extent as to render the arrester useless. If mechanical pro-tection is needed, it is better to provide for the same by the use of alarger size of wire. If the ground plate cannot be buried in per-manently moist soil, half a bushel or so of coke or charcoal shouldbe placed below and above the plate to assist in the retention ofmoisture. When the latter procedure is followed, the ground shouldbe located some distance away from the butt of the pole, as such aground would produce an excess of moisture at the butt of thepole, which is not to be desired on account of the increased decaythat it would produce. Ground wires should run as straight as possible without bends orpigtails, to interpose self-induction, direct from the arrester to theground plate. Nearly all of the arresters on the market at thepresent time will, if provided with proper grounds, give satis-factory service. The writer believes that nearly all of the troublewith the present arresters is
