Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he illustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Erasmus, and Sir Henry Wyatt. This painting, titled Sir Richard Southwell,is a striking portrait of one of Holbein's contemporaries. It was Sir Richard Southwell who did much to bring about the fall of Sir Thomas More. The painting dates to 1536.
