Its situation, in the midst of a beautiful amphitheatre,is one of the finest that can be conceived. Large plantationsof forest trees form, as it were, its wings; and the eminence onwhich it stands slopes gently down to a fine lawn, at the extre-mity of which the river flows gently along. On the oppositebank are the ruins of Roxburgh Castle, and in the distancethe Cheviots, whose finely rounded summits form a gracefultermination to the view. This elegant structure was built in 1718 from designs fur-nished, it is said, by Sir John Vanburgh; and was originally aplain, though, from its great size, a most princely dwelling. Thepresent Duke, a few years ago, caused great additions and im-provements to be made upon it under the direction of Mr Play-fair of Edinburgh; and from the judicious manner in which. 5 4 el ENVIRONS OF KELSO. 65 these have been carried into effect, Floors Castle is now one ofthe most stately specimens of the Tudor style of architecturein Britain. The park is of great extent and beauty: within it aholly tree marks the spot where James II. was killed by thebursting of a cannon while besieging Roxburgh Castle on the3d August 1460. Three miles farther up the river is MAKERSTOUN, the seat of Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, Bart., surroundedwith fine old woods, and commanding a very beautiful prospectto the south. The Tweed is here so closely pent in by rockswhich stretch across, that the fisherman, with the aid of hisrod, can fling himself from one projection to another. Thewaters rush through the narrow channels with irresistible force;and as they roar and foam, and throw
