As it says on the sign by this statue: "The Buddha, Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, About 5th - 6th Century AD. The Buddha sits in a 'European posture' on a lion throne, his feet supported by a double lotus. Leogryphs and aquatic monsters, part of the elaborate throne back are visible beneath the halo.
