During the next stroke, the pressure behind the inter-mediate piston falls as the air expands, until the lowpressure delivery valves open again and the next charge ofair is passed over from the low pressure. On the succeedingcompression stroke of the intermediate cylinder, the airpassed over from the low pressure cylinder, together withthe air which remains in the intercooler pipe connexion, isagain compressed. At the same time the high pressurecylinder is performing its suction stroke, so that theincreasing intermediate pressure rapidly reaches a pointwhen the suction valve on the high pressure opens andsome of the intermediate air is passed over into the highpressure cylinder. This, during the next stroke, is com-pressed by the high pressure plunger and delivered ; andthe cycle is repeated. In other respects the compressor is the same as Quadruplex compressor, that is to say, it has no. Via. 77.—General Arriingemimt i>t (Jomim.^or fur Curcln )w[i-(;yrli Mnrino liiii!! For small and very high pressure engines this vertical com-pressor is attached direct to the bearers which also carry theengine, brackets being cast on the sides of the compressorfor this purpose. For larger engines a segmental facing isprovided on the back of the compressor casing, attacheddirectly to a similar facing on the engine bed. The advantage of this type of machine is that all valvesbelow the centre line of the compressor are entirely doneaway with, and this not only simplifies the machine andimproves its efficiency, but also makes periodical over-hauling quite an easy matter. It will be seen that the onlyvalves requiring attention are rendered accessible by liftingthe top water bonnet, which uncovers
