Starlings gather from miles around to roost under the iron structure, huddling together against the cruel chilling east winds which are now expected. With the weather becoming increasing wintery the numbers of birds has swelled to an estimated 50,000 and includes migratory populations which have fled the continent of Europe for warmer climes.
