Bacillus coagulans, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Bacillus coagulans (formally Lactobacillus sporogenes), are aerobic, spore-forming, gram-positive bacteria. The characteristics of this bacteria, including its resistance to high temperatures and acidity and the production of the L+ optical isomer of lactic acid, mean it is used as a probiotic supplement for humans and animals. Magnification: x25,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
