The landscape at Pergamon, aka Pergamos or Pergamum a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis, located on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus (modern-day Bakırçay) and northwest of the modern city of Bergama, Turkey. In 88 BC, Mithridates VI, king of Pontus and Armenia Minor in northern Anatolia from about 120–63 BC, made the city the headquarters in his first war against Rome, in which he was defeated. At the end of the war, the city was stripped of all its benefits and its status as a free city and required to pay tribute, accommodate and supply Roman troops.
