Australian colonisation. Artworks of two 1790 scenes from the early period of Australian colonisation. At top is the shipwreck of HMS Sirius, the flagship of the fleet that set out establish a British colony in Australia. This shipwreck (see C016/5265) occurred on 19 March 1790 on a reef off Norfolk Island, in the Pacific 1400 kilometres east of the Australian mainland. The crew were stranded until rescued nearly a year later. At bottom is the incident where the new colony's Governor Arthur Phillip was wounded on 7 September 1790 by Australian aborigines in a cove near what is now Sydney (see C016/5334). These are drawings 22 and 23 from the Natural History Museum's Watling Collection.
