Christ Church Spitalfields west front & tower looking up; built by Nicholas Hawksmoor 1714 - 1729


Christ Church Spitalfields, in the East End of London. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor 1714-29. West front: the spire soars to a height of 225 feet over a portico of four giant Tuscan columns supporting a a semi- circular arch. Hawksmoor uses these elements to create the effect of a colossal Venetian window.
