His early work on topology included a proof of a sphere eversion (Smale's paradox, 1958), and work on Poincare's conjecture (1961-2). He has also worked on dynamical systems. Most of his career has been at the University of California, Berkeley. Smale was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 1970. His awards include the Fields Medal (1966), the National Medal of Science (1996), and the Wolf Prize (2006/7). Photographed in June 2010.
