His behavior was so extravagant thatCaroline imagined something extraordinaryhad happened; but she did not guess thatthe little fugitive had attempted to leaveher. He ran to the farthest extremity ofthe yard: he returned, and tearing roundher, bounded again to a considerable dis-tance ; lessening, however, the extent ofhis sallies at every repetition; and againrushed upon her to express his joy at be-holding her again. He remained the whole of that day, un-able to conquer his reluctance to leaveCaroline, and the apothecary: the nighthowever was passed in making resolutionsfor the morning ; and agreeably with theseno sooner were the doors open, than Keep-er set forward on his journey.
