S. Examining Surgeonsince 1893. RICHARD THEODORE BANG, , and Surgeon, was born in New YorkCity, December 3, 1S55, son of Henry and Eliza-beth Eleanor (Bartels) Bang. His father was anofficer in the Prussian Armv who came to America. RICHARD T. BANG as a political refugee in 1S48, and his mother wasthe daughter of a leading lawyer in Hanover, Ger-many. He attended private schools in boyhoodand was prepared for College by tutors, at home,entering the Freshman Class of Columbia in 1872and graduating in 1876. He immediately matricu-lated at the College of Physicians and Surgeons ofColumbia, and took the degree of Doctor of Medi-cine in 1879, receiving at the same time that ofMaster of Arts from the University. He passedsuccessfully the competitive examination for theposition of Resident Physician and Surgeon at Hospital in New York City, and filled thatoffice for three years, resigning in 1SS2 to begin private practice. He was Assistant Attending Phy-sician to the New York Hospital for five years un-til 1887, and Attending Physi
