An abstract view of Giotto's Bell Tower next to the Duomo in the Piazza Del Duomo, Florence.

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence. The painter Giotto designed the bell tower campanile while the octagonal cupola that dominates both the church and the city was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, master architect and sculptor. Opposite the cathedral stands the Baptistery which is reputed to be the oldest building in the city. In 1982, the historic center of Florence was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
