As early as the beginning ofthe eighteenth century, the place passed into the hands of a commercial company, whichused it as a regular place of meeting, and soon had representatives in all parts of the. winckelmanns monument. world. There is little to be said about the churchesof Trieste ; but one grave we must visit, which every German looks upon with is the sepulchre of Winckelmann, the great man who gave new light to the study ofantiquity, and who was murdered in Trieste, in 1768, at the moment when he was showingto his guide Arcangeli, a collection of ancient gold coins.
