Vol. 87, No. 4. is rigidly supported from the frame the same as the Hnk, andtheir relative positions are therefore unchanged and unafifectedby any vertical movement of the wheels and boxes in the pedes-tals. The eccentric or return crank is of the same general formand performs the same functions as in the ordinary Walschaertvalve gear. This valve gear has been applied to a Chicago, Peoria & locomotive which was built to carry 200 lbs. steam pres-sure and it is reported that since applying the new gear thepressure has been reduced to 180 lbs. without reducing theefficiency of the locomotive. This is believed to be due to themore accurate and uniform movement of the valve.
