At a suitable age he was sent to theacademy at Leicester to supplement such teach-ing as the times then afforded in graduating with great credit, he return-ed home to take charge of his fathers farm,who was now advanced in years, and this filial(hit\- he continued to render until his fathersdeath, .\pril 2~, 1850. Thrown upon his ownresources, he took up school teaching in hisnative town, an occupation for which he waswell qualified, and in connection with which heemjiloyed his leisure hours in surveying. His store becamenot only a political center for the discussionof state and national politics, but a place totalk over town affairs, and he was not theleast among the many debaters of that day whohere found a free forum. His services were inready demand at auctions, and his ability inthat line has never been ec|uallcd in a wider field for development. sold his store in Spencer, in 1855, andremoved to Elizabethport, New Jersey, wherehe engaged extensively in the manufacture ofcarriage wheels. Finding a more desirablelocation, he removed to Newark, New Jersey,in i8C>0, and in partnership with William established a factory
