His father,Waters Holman, was born in 1796, andthough only 16 years old enlisted in theWar of 1812. He also served in theAroostook War. He was the first to makescythes in the State of Maine, and one, on which his name is en-. 754- HISTORY AND REMINISCENCES graved, is kept in the State House at Augusta, Me. One ofCorporal Holmans ancestors was Colonel Jonathan Holman, whowas born in 1732, and served in the French and Canadian warsand in the War of the Revolution. He was a personal friend ofGeorge Washington and was with him at Trenton, Benningtonand Germantown. The British officers used to say that theywould rather see the devil coming than Col Jonathan Holmanon his old white horse. Corporal Holmans ancestors, Solomon, John, David, Edwardand Stephen Holman, served with distinction in the colonial wars,and Colonel Jonathan, John, Samuel, Stephen, Abel, Daniel, Elishaand Jonathan (junior) Holman took active part in the War of theRevolution. Corporal Holmans grandfather was Daniel Holman,an officer of the War of the Revolution.
