The Hayward Japanese Garden is one of the oldest Japanese gardens in California. It was designed along traditional lines by Kimio Kimura following Japanese garden design principles, using California native plants & stones. Nails have been hidden and recessed to simulate Japanese carpentry and garden techniques. The site was formerly part of Hayward High School. The garden is maintained by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District
