These puffins were snapped by Dutch photographer Mathijs Van Lisdonk on the Farne Islands. FARNE ISLANDS, UK. BRITISH puffins have been snapped enjoying the summer as they appear to wave at a photographer's lens and dance the flamenco. Photographs taken on the Farne islands shows an elegant puffin dancing, all he would need to complete the shot is a pair of castanets. Other action shots show the puffin mid-flight with a beak full of small fish, their favourite foods being sand eels, herring and hake. These pint-sized creatures are just 12 inches in height and have a wingspan of 25 inches. Mathijs van Lisdonk (46) is the Dutch photographer behind these impressive images taken on UK shores. ?Since one of my goals was to have the puffin frontally coming in with fish and another goal was to have two of them with their beaks together I couldn't be happier," he said. "It's always a big rush when images you imagine taking really work out in the field. ?Especially when you travel far, it's the best feeling ever. ?That?s the beauty of bird photography. Sometimes it doesn?t work out, nature is always unpredictable." Mathijs explained how he came to first track down the puffin colony. ?When an Instagram friend invited me to go on a trip to see them I couldn't refuse. She is from England and she knew where to find them,? he said. ?On the boat to the island we had already seen a few and we started taking pictures but the real fun started when we landed on the island. ?I didn't expect there to be that many and so close by on the island itself. ?We already had been reading a bit about their behaviour to make it easier to get the shot I wanted. ?We knew they would come from the sea to their nesting ground, circle a few times before landing with the fish to feed the young, so we followed the ones who came in from the sea with fish and tried to catch them just before landing which actually worked."
