Bacteria were added to a given volume of coelomic fluid and allowed to react for 1-12 minutes. At the end of this period unbound coelomic fluid was diluted out with 4 ml tryptic soy broth and the bacteria grown up in the usual way. All bacteria which had bound sufficient GAF during the original incubation period were killed during the subsequent growth period. Bacterial killing was calculated directly from relative optical density as described in Methods. b) Initial rates of binding (number of bacteria per min) were calculated from tangents drawn through the origin in Figure 4a. Initial rates are plotted as a function of concentration on a double-logarithmic plot. The slope of the straight line drawn through the three points is Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ); Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ).
