Following the unexpected ‘vote leave’ victory at the EU referendum held on Thursday 23rd June 2016, Cardiff as a city came together to show that these results don't represent what the city believes in. Although Wales as a principality voted to leave the EU, 60% of Cardiff's electorate voted to remain. This gathering was not a protest against the results, but an opportunity to show the city’s appreciation of the European Union, and everything it has offered Wales. Speakers included - Leanne Wood AM (Leader of Plaid Cymru), Mogdad Abdeen and Davina Gomes (Welsh Refugee Council), Beth Button (President of NUS Wales), Rev. Aled Edwards OBE (Chair of Displaced People in Action), Meic Birtwistle (Labour Party activist and TV producer), Shazia Awan (feminist and anti-racist campaigner), Jamie Bevan (Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith), Emyr Gruffydd (campaigner - European Free Alliance Youth), Mark Blayney (poet), Xose Álvarez (Head of international affairs - Iniciativa pol Asturianu). There was also a performance by musician Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals).
