Table II shows the best records for given distances. They are classified byspeeds alone, no account being taken of the modifying effects of load or grade,or size of engine. It will be borne in mind that these records are all those ofsteam locomotives. For distances under 15 miles, the electric locomotivewhich was tried on the Berlin-Zossen line in Germany in 1903 made speeds over130 miles an hour which have not yet
