Lime burn. Close-up of a burn due to lime on the leg of a 41-year-old man. Lime is produced commercially as preparations of calcium oxide. It is used in the preparation of cement and mortar and to neutralize acid soils in agriculture. It is very strongly alkaline and can burn the skin on contact. The lime burn in this patient is shown one week after it was received. The lime has burned off the top layer of skin (epidermis) and the underneath layers have become infected. Evidence of the infection can be seen in the redness of the skin and the layer of pus (green, shiny) on the burn surface.
