Photograph of man next to tree obtained using an image intensifier in very low light conditions. Image Intensifiers typically have a light amplification capability of 50, 000 x to 250,000 x the original light intensity of a scene. These instruments use the visible spectrum, and a small part of the near infra- red for detection. The incoming photons strike a photo cathode which produces an electron emission. The electrons are then amplified using a micro-channel plate and then focused onto a luminescent screen via an electron lens. This screen reconverts the electron signal into light which is bright enough to observe.
