Martin Johann Schmidt was born in Grafenwörth on 25 September 1718 and was educated at the abbeys of Dürnstein and Göttweig. The oldest preserved painting by him in his hometown is the Nepomuk altar in the Church of St. Vitus (German: Veit) the city parish church in Krems. It was executed in 1746. He is especially well-known for his painting on the high altar St. Nicholas Saving the Shipwrecked. Kremser Schmidt`s reputation soon spread far and wide. His pictures can be found throughout Lower Austria as well as in Upper Austria Carniola (the western part of present-day Slovenia) and Bavaria. He was even commissioned to do works for patrons in Poland. In 1786 he became a full member of the Imperial Academy of the Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1782 Schmidt was commissioned by the Abbot of Melk to paint a portrait of the reigning pope Pius VI. One of his final works was the ceiling fresco in the Krems parish church in 1787. Schmidt died on 28 June 1801 and is buried in the Stein Cemetery. There is a bust of Schmidt by the Krems artist Hans Freillinger on the Rathausplatz in Stein.
