Oscilloscope displaying 'white noise'. Oscilloscopes use cathode ray tubes to graphically exhibit variations in voltage or electric current. A time base signal dictates the movement of a spot which travels horizontally across the screen, displaying a waveform. In the image there is a lot of activity, but no discernable pattern to the waveform. This is known as white noise.
