The River Styx, an arm of the lake that empties into it back of themountain, is quieter than any place around. It is a romantic spot, andon account of the solitude that prevails is a favorite abode for such birdsas herons, which stand in the water on one leg, heedless of all that sur-rounds Bridge on the Morris Canal,Lake Hopatcoug, N. J. Hendersons Cove is probably the most beautiful spot on the lake; itis made so by the rugged Bluffs that overhang it, which are covered bya hardy growth of oak and hemlock. Trips by boat to the Cove are one ofthe fascinating pleasures of life here. The lake finds its outlet by the Musconetcong River, which flowsan irregular course and empties into the Delaware, 40 miles distant. Attimes the Canal Company utilizes the water as a means for feeding theCanal, and at such times the lake surface recedes two feet or more. STANHOPE.
