Young gibbous starlet (Asterina gibbosa) starfish, light micrograph. The outline has two types of protuberances, the short jagged spines and the long rounded tube feet (podia). This ventral (underside) view has a clear central hole (the mouth) surrounded by a central pentagonal groove and tube feet over the whole surface. The tube feet are extended or retracted by a hydraulic system and are used for movement or adhesion to surfaces. For the dorsal (top) view, see image Z550/178. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
