Lhasa, Tibet - October 2006 This is the imposing Palace of the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, who fled to exile in India after the Chinese invasion and annexation of the country in 1959. These seemingly endless steps look almost abstract, don't they? With altitude sickness and at 3656m altitude, walking up the steps is a real killer. Seriously, don't try it unless super-fit and fully acclimatised.
