Dog tick. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a male brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, a blood-sucking parasite of dogs. Ticks (family Ixodidae) are small eight-legged animals related to spiders. All species are blood-sucking parasites and some act as vectors of disease, such as the genus Ixodes, which transmits Lyme disease to humans. Their specialised mouthparts are adapted to pierce the skin of the host and lock tight for several days while the tick swells with blood. Magnification unknown.
