A German large mask of shame,17th/18th century. Made of several pieces,elaborately chased mask of sheet iron in the shape of a wolf's head with snarling teeth and protruding tongue. The front and back piece connected by hinges,pin-and-hook closures on either side. Patinated metal surfaces and slightly rusted,partially repaired and with small rust holes. Height ca. 64 cm. Various late medieval sources describe grave robbers,body snatchers,and incest offenders as "wolves".
