I have a Wilks hot water boiler at present and am thinking of getting an- other as soon as I increase my glass area. I think, however, that too much of the heat goes up the chimney and have tried to devise some method of diverting the draft downward. It is my opinion that, by bricking in the area between the two boilers, I could bring the extra heat into contact with the back of the boilers and still permit the smoke to escape from below, as in an ordinary range. I shall appreciate any information you can give me concern- ing the solution of this problem. O. S.—Minn. If the draft of the chimney is suffi- cient, it will be advisable to put in a damper and, by securing an indirect cir- cuit for the escaping smoke and gases, utilize a considerable amount of heat whicli would otherwise be lost. If anything of the kind is arranged, have the connection with the smoke flue made in sucli a way that a direct draft can be obtained when starting the fire in the boiler. The arrangement proposed would probably work better with a good grade of hard coal or coke than witli soft coal.
