The site was set up by British software engineer Alan Ellis in 2004 and helped users to find other people on the internet who were prepared to share files - allowing people to obtain music for free. The site did not host any music itself. Membership was free but by invitation only and users then paid a "donation" to nominate friends to join. Police raided Ellis' home in 2007 and found the site had around 200,000 members, who had downloaded millions of music files from each other, and bank accounts containing a substantial amount of money. Ellis was subsequently charged with conspiracy to defraud record labels and musicians via illegal file-sharing but was found not guilty by a jury at Teeside Crown Court in the UK in January 2010. The Oink website, which was also known as Oink's Pink Palace, no longer exists. Editorial use only.
