Bar Harbor, Maine USA - 8 November 2013 The beautiful seaside town of Bar Harbour in Maine, USA, is a favourite stop for North Atlantic cruise ships - and for lobsters! It also offers some interesting geology. Volcanic flows and ash accumulated in the ocean basin, and deposited layers of ash in the developing Bar Harbor Formation. Later volcanic activity injected black igneous rock into the granites and surrounding rocks. The everything was polished by erosion and glacial activity. Here we see a large boulder on the shore line, probably left there by a passing glacier.
