A person with diabetes has impaired ability to process glucose which the body uses as fuel for energy. When the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin which the body uses for burning glucose a patient must have the insulin administered externally. To date most diabetic patients utilize a needle to inject themselves at least once daily but other delivery methods are being developed.
