Upon post-mortem examination, there was discovered a Purulent Infection of the Navel 1013 small abscess at the dorso-lumbar articulation, which, rupturinginto the spinal canal, had caused pressure upon the spinal cord. In another instance, in a calf, there appeared at the age of 6or 8 weeks a gradually increasing paraplegia. The caretakerhad not observed any disease or infection of the navel, but acareful inspection of the part revealed the presence of an oldsuppuration, the evidence consisting chiefly of dried pus uponthe surrounding hairs, and a naked point at the navel, indicatingthat a limited infection of the part had existed. Being unableto account otherwise for the paralysis, we diagnosed spinalabscess as a result of navel infection, and finally, destroying theanimal, we discovered upon post-mortem examination a largeabscess in the spinal canal, pressing upon the cord, as shown inFig- 145-. Fig. 145. abscess, in a four-weeks-old , Inspissated pus in spinal canal, pressing upon the spinal cord, SC,causing paralysis of posterior parts. Pathology. The disease is the result of the entrance, intothe freshly broken navel, of pus-forming micro-organisms. Sofar as we are aware, the disease is not limited to any one form ofinfection. In one instance, where a foal had succumbed to thedisease, bacteriologic examination of deep-seated pyaemicabscesses revealed the presence of a pure streptococcic local infection of the navel is a mixed one, as has beenshown by Bollinger and others. Clinically we observe that, IOI4 Veterinary Obstetrics along with the general purulent infection, there maj also occura tetanus infection, inducing a virulent form of that and others have shown that, in calves, along with otherinfections, or without them, there
