Milkmaid of Cherbourg.

Milkmaid of Cherbourg. In Normandy, the women usually carry goods on their shoulders, not on their heads or in their arms. This milkmaid carries a jug of milk called a "canne," a measure of capacity from the Romans. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
