JOSEPH DOIXSON LOMAX, )., Physician,was born in Bolton, England, son of Johnand .Anna (Dodson) His ancestors werewell-to-do iJeople and took an active part in thelife of their native town. His father was a book-binder and printer who came to New York in thethirties. He invented wood-letter cutting, and hiswork became so popular in the trade that it was inuniversal use at the time of his death. Dr. Lomaxreceived his early education in private schools; he. JOSEPH D. Studied medicine at the College of Physicians andSurgeons of Columbia, and was graduated in after graduation he entered the ColoredHome, and after a term of service as House Physi-cian in the Hospital connected with it, removed toTroy where he engaged in active practice. InOctober of 1863 he received the appointment ofMedical -Superintendent of Marshall Infirmary, atTroy, New York, which position he still holds. Hehas always taken an active interest in church work ;is Vice-President of St. Stephens Guild and Editorof its paper, and for five years taught English andthe Classics in the Boys School connected with theChurch of the Holy Cross.
