View SE of the monastery, post office & museum from the village green, Caldey Island, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. The Italianate monastery, designed by architect Coates Carter, was built 1910-13 for Dom Aelred (Benjamin Fearnley Carlyle) & his group of Anglican Benedictines who were received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1913. In 1925 the island was sold to the present order of Reformed Cistercians (Trappist) from Scourmont Abbey, Chimay, Belgium, who took up residence in 1929.
