R. Deming. In 1789, thirty years before the temperance movement inwhich the Rev. Lyman Beecher became so prominent, a tem-perance pledge was drafted and signed by many original pledge was republished with other articles bear-ing upon the same subject in the Litchfield Enquirer of Sep-tember 26, 1833.
