Its trunk is usuallystraight and columnar or slightly tapering,with scaly bark showing little tendency tobecome ridged and its top is usually of narrowpyramidal form with short horizontal branchesand open airy foliage. It is distinctively atree of swampy lands, venturing farther outon low lake shores antl quaking sphagnumbogs than any otiier tree excepting sometimesthe Swamp Spruce and these regions it char-acterizes in summer with its pale green foliagaor lights up in autumn with its covering ofbright yellow.
