When thenews of Great Britains losses inAmerica reached India, Hastingshad to make desperate efforts toretain the power and influenceof the East India French were again activeagainst British rule, and, throughtheir agents, were stirring upthe native princes to revolt. Hastings was in sore need offunds to meet these difficulties, and to pay the large profitsexpected by the company. In the effort to uphold at anycost the rule of Great Britain, he extorted large sums. In this way, he succeeded not onlyin maintaining the supremacy of Great Britain, but also inextending her power in all directions in India. The rapid extension of the empire in the far East inducedPitt to carry through Parliament the India Bill of 1784,which brought the government of India much moredirectly under the control of the crown. A Board of Control,consisting of five members, was appointed to supervise theactions of the directors of the East India Company, and ofthis board the president was a member of the British gov-ernment.
