JOHN AUGUSTUS PAINE PAINE, JOHN AUGUSTUS, was born at Woodstock, WindhamCounty, Connecticut, March 13th, 1850, the son of Martha andLucia J. (Perrin) Paine. His earliest ancestor in America,Stephen Paine, of Norfolk, England, was one of the heroic band whoemigrated on the little ship Diligent from the Mother Country andsettled in Connecticut in the year 1638. The line of descent isthrough Captain Isaac Paine of Scituate, Ehode Island, who served inthe Eevolution, and married Hannah Williams, great-granddaughter ofEoger Williams. Mr. Paine is fourth in line of descent. The fatherof John A. Paine was a prosperous farmer of Windham County, aman of strict adherence to principle and duty.
